Fix the dye of the clothes before use
A well-known process, called "colorfast," can help you set the dye in your clothes, thereby reducing the risk of them bleeding onto your doll. This method works for all types of fabrics, including wool, linen, denim, or cotton. Here’s how to proceed:
Step 1: Prepare the solution
Fill a large bowl or a cleaning bucket with a gallon of water (about 3.8 liters). Add 1/4 cup of salt and 1 cup of white vinegar. These ingredients help to naturally set the color in the fabric. Mix well so that the salt and vinegar are evenly distributed. Note: Avoid using malt vinegar or apple cider vinegar, which are less effective for this method.
Step 2: Soak the garment
Completely submerge the garment in the solution and press down to ensure it is fully saturated. Let it soak for 24 hours so that the dye is deeply set.
Step 3: Check and rinse
Remove the garment from the solution, then rinse the bowl or bucket with cold water. Place the garment back in the container, squeeze it, and gently rub. If you notice that dye continues to be released, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the water remains clear.
Step 4: Dry the garment
Let the garment dry completely. Once dry, it will better retain its color, which will limit the risk of dye transfer when you use it on your doll.
